What to Expect When You Bring Home a New Dog

Even confident dogs need time to decompress after adoption. The 3-3-3 Rule helps set realistic expectations — this isn’t “bad behavior,” it’s stress, confusion, and learning a whole new world.

The Misfit Ranch 3-3-3 Rule: what to expect when you bring home a new dog

The first 3 days: decompression & safety

    • It’s normal if they don’t eat much, hide, or seem shut down.
    • Keep things calm: no visitors, no dog parks, no big outings.
    • Expect possible potty regression or stress tummy.

The first 3 weeks: learning the routine

    • Consistency is everything: feeding, potty breaks, and rest.
    • Go slow with new people/dogs — avoid overwhelming “socializing.”
    • Short, positive training sessions help build confidence.

The first 3 months: settling in

    • True personality emerges as they feel safe.
    • Some behavioral regression can happen — don’t give up.
